Social their environment promotes better access to healthy

Social
determinants are defined as “the conditions in which people are born, work, and
live, age, and the set of forces and systems shaping the conditions daily
life.” (WHO,) The article, “The Social Determinants of Chronic Disease”
examines how the different factor of social determinants impacts peoples’
health condition, specifically in relation to chronic disease. The authors, who
all have obtained a PHD or doctorate in physiology, sociology and/or medicine;
constructed this article to study how different factors social determinants
influences the well-being of different communities. The article categorizes
five different types of social determinants as, neighbor environment, health
care, social and community, education, and economic stability. The conditions
and circumstance of a community are often overlooked when determining the
causes of an illness. But factors such as the amount of education, workplace,
and lifestyles of those around you can be aspects that affect health. The
research has shown in this article, shows that different aspects of your
environment can either promote your health or lead to the deterioration of your
health. In the article we learn that there is a direct correlation to our
health condition, well-being and social determinants.

Often
society perceives their environment and socioeconomic status as non -health
factors, or view it as having minimal correlation to their health, but the
factors impact our health directly. The authors in “The Social Determinants of
Chronic Disease”, states ‘living in A neighborhood with high collective
efficacy has been correlated with better self-reported physical health
additionally, participation in voluntary organization has been associated with
better BMI and emotional health, whereas social cohesion has been linked to improved
depressive symptoms and positive health-related behaviors” (The Social
Determinants of Chronic Disease).  We see
discrepancies in the health poor and wealthy communities.  People with low economic status are more
susceptible to emotional and physical illness, because of their poor health
habits.  While people of high economic
status tends to be healthier emotionally and physically because their
environment promotes better access to healthy living.

The
use of smoking is very prevalent among lower socioeconomic community because of
the lack of education and no alternatives to stress relievers. Although, it was
initially popular among affluent communities, it declined when the detrimental
effects of smoking were made known. The article states, “The result is that smoking today is
unusual among people at the higher and middle levels of society and is
concentrated among those toward the bottom of the social ladder. Individuals in
higher socioeconomic groups were the first to adopt smoking in the early 20th
century and other social classes followed, but growing publicity about the
harmful effects of cigarettes in the 1960s led to a shift in smoking patterns
over time as better educated and more-affluent groups began avoiding the
practice.” (Social determinants of chronic disease) Being educated on the
negative effects and in a less stress free surroundings played a part in these
wealthy communities making better choices for their health. The wealthy are
provided with an advantage because they are properly informed about the effect
of negative substances like smoking. Education is a key component in getting
people to understand which choices are going to make them healthier.

In the
article we see several examples of how social determinates effects our overall
health. The correlation between the two are made evident in the article. The factors
that impact varies across our everyday lives from our work, family, education
to even our genetics can have a huge influence on our health.
